Scaling Online Payments at PedidosYa

In this case study video for Spreedly, I explain how PedidosYa tackled the challenge of scaling online payments across Latin America’s diverse and fragmented payment landscape.

The Challenge

PedidosYa operates across multiple countries, each with its own:

  • Payment providers and processors
  • Preferred payment methods (cards, local wallets, bank transfers)
  • Regulatory requirements
  • Consumer payment behaviors

Building and maintaining individual integrations for each market wasn’t sustainable as we scaled.

The Solution

By partnering with Spreedly, we were able to:

  • Consolidate integrations through a single API layer
  • Add new payment methods quickly as we entered new markets
  • Maintain flexibility to route transactions to optimal providers
  • Reduce engineering overhead and focus on core product development

The Impact

This approach allowed PedidosYa to scale from a regional player to the leading delivery platform across Latin America, processing millions of transactions while maintaining high acceptance rates and a smooth customer experience.

I’m Mathias Fonseca. I work at PedidosYa, which is a food delivery company in LATAM. We’re actually expanding and making more deliveries. We do payments and fraud prevention. We’ve been doing them for 3 years now, and it’s a lot of work, but it’s rewarding work.

Our company provides a mobile application for Android or iOS, and also web desktop and web mobile applications. So our users — they are able to order whatever they want to be delivered to them.

The role that payments play in our company is a very important one, because the flow changed so much when we added online payments. Previously we relied on the restaurants and our partners in the business to pay us our commissions, and the payments improved our revenue as a merchant and also improved the experience for the users.

What led us to work with Spreedly is that the market in Latin regarding payment providers and fraud prevention providers is so complex that we didn’t find one gateway that solved all the problems that we had. We found Spreedly as a perfect solution for a bold tokenization of our cards, so that we can switch providers whenever we want, we can have redundancy with them, and also we can use one of the features of Spreedly that’s called Payment Method Distribution to call whatever provider we want. In terms of anti-fraud, we can test some tools and being able to not have the cards in our store.

Spreedly is a very good fit for us because the numbers we were managing were extremely complicated, with so many providers. With Spreedly we have just one team of people to talk to, and everything seems easier.

The area that I see from my technical point of view in the company is more related to how much time and orders we lost because some of our providers went down and we weren’t able to replace them quickly. So with Spreedly we can change almost in real time the providers that we use.

For the Latin market, the most relevant feature that Spreedly has is being able to change providers whenever you want, and that’s really important because the market is always changing in Latin.

I would recommend Spreedly, and I have recommended Spreedly for everybody.
